I liked some awful shit when I was a kid and I know you did too Rickun. Just because this represents something that belongs to people who are a certain age at a certain moment in time, and that they identify with, doesn't mean that anybody who craps on it is Grandpaw Crankypants. There are far better examples of this sort of thing. Lots. All I'm saying is, this ain't it.
I do see the connection between this, and what Sonnenzimmer or Damien Tran or Strawdogs or others are doing...but the key word is "Doing." This isn't doing anything, it's just sort of there, in. The intent is, no intent. Look what I did, whatever. And yet someone like Dave Flores can do something just as effortless or deliberately bad as this, and it has all the wit and charm this lacks. It's just the absolute path of least resistance.
Is half-assed an aesthetic?
I don't know... you could say "how is this different from a xerox-ltraset-collage-whiteout-sharpie punk flyer from 1980 and not be far wrong. Except with those too, there are some that are amazing and some that aren't, and the difference is that some have wit, impact, balls, or whatever undefinable thing that ties them together makes them kick ass. Others just grab a bunch of shit and throw it at the wall, and fail. Or maybe once in a while succeed by pure chance. But if the aesthetic is to just not care, the successes are correspondingly few.
