Only one point: there too many people doing the same thing, whether it is music or art. Copies of copies of copies.

always will be. few innovators but lots of copying. They truly great work will rise to the top.

Jeph you can draw your ass off. And you should get busy. It will be a long haul...; P

"it's the same arguement if illustrated posters are more 'valid' than photoshoped posters, for example. "

exactly. I will never take away from the skill illustrators have. I don't have to like every single poster but I know they are working hard to make it. You stick around here long enough you know who is working at it and who is phoning it in. Fisher, Jay Ryan, Emek, Goad, AA, Slater, Kleinsmith etc. are all busting their ass in their own style. All valid.

tell me what you know about The Hold Steady. You to Richie.

There are reasons this poster looks like it does.

We just did three posters for them. They are designery. Each one speaks to a different part of their music. You won't like them but fans flipped out when they saw them.

It's just what you pay attention too. I can tell every designer on here apart by the thumbnails.

It's like saying al rap sounds the same or all punk is alike. If you are into a scene you know the nuances.

You didn't say anything specifically about AA or us but this whole re-dredging of this topic was started by richie over an AA poster he deemed to not qualify as a rock poster. So it all folds back to poking "designers" with a stick. We've all heard the same boring argument ad nauseam about how we make "wallpaper" and not "rock" posters and that there's no way they can be successful.

it's the constant barrage of comments like that and this:

"The problem to me with designery arty posters is that they look nice for the sake of being artfully correct, which means it was lazy thinking that produced it. To me, they look like they were copies from old art books from the 40s and 50s. "

that piss me and michael and dan and dusty etc off. Saying the way we design is lazy is flat wrong. Saying posters in our style aren't capable of getting people to the show is wrong. We spend hours pulling a concept together and choosing the right imagery to project that concept regardless of where those images ultimately come from.

Every time Richie or someone gets a hair in his ass to tear apart a poster those who work in my style do do we have to sit and take it? If I return and say Richie is a shitting typographer all of a sudden I'm blind and tasteless? All total there is something basically wrong with the type in Richie's posters and on that level they suck. At the same time they are great ROCK posters so they succeed. I already said I appreciate his work for what it is and just ask for the same in return.

It's a super old broke dick argument. We are all making good stuff depending on who is looking at it.

I think this is a great poster on a lot of levels. Type is a little wonky at the bottom but Illo is amazing and the colours fit really well so I'll give the type a pass

You are making huge assumptions that a poster like AA's new Hold Steady isn't enough to motivate people to go to the show because you deem it or similar styles to be "wallpaper" it takes all kinds to make the world go around. You supposedly know "rock" you don't appear to know jack shit about indie rock so why would I or anyone think your opinion on posters is the end all be all?

Lets see you make a poster that will get Bright Eyes fans of the ledge and to a show. Can I call you blind and tasteless if you don't think AA or we do a great job reaching the audience of the bands we do work for?
