thanks sicknimich* i can't say that i'm really too proud of this poster ( concept-final in less than 14.75minutes) but......burning spear dug it, the club liked it, the fans love it ( hell, it's even one of my wife's favorites and she hates reggae ) and the show sold out. therefor....the perfect poster. i sometimes think that we've gotten into the mind-set of trying to out-do ourselves or design for the other poster designers when, sometimes, the boring literal stuff is the best way to sell a show ( which, ultimately, should be our 'job'). dunno.
thanks guys* glad you guys liked. i wish i could take credit for the concept but it was diana, the club's booking agent, who came up with the hangman concept. we started puting these up at the beginning of the month, replacing with the next sequence every few days, until we ended with the last one on the 16 ( under contract we couldn't promote the show before so......).
ithe dea worked great, it definetely got alot of attention.
flipperfins* snow white will be in the next batch of girlies.
randomizer* question...but a fun one. i love dk and i love winston smith but...interesting delema. this poster was designed 24-25years after the bands origin. about the same length of time that winston smith took his images from mainstream publications for the original dead kennedys stuff. so....pure punk or rehash?
thanks guys* this is a bit of a cop-out tho. i only had a half-hour to put this together so i grabbed an old design about corperate monopolies ( than spent about two hours trying to justify the image......"alvin has walked the tightrope of mainstream/corperate without contridicting his strong roots...blah blah blah"). oh well. monkey nuts. it works as a strong image that leads the focus to the artist's name.
thanks guys* i'm glad you like. i'm definetley happy with the way this turned out ( minimalist copy is fun!). the show sold out before the poster hit the streets but.....they are still going up ( " hey kids! look what you missed. ).
UPDATE* ...i just read in the local weekly that 'common' ( the rap-star) is refering to himself as 'common sense' on national tv ( the dave chappel show ) even tho he agreed not to in an out-of-court settlement with the band.
...not sure what's gonna happen on a legal front ( and, outside morbid/sadistic curiosity, don't care ) but........
it actually seems like 'the band' is getting sckrewed over in this one. jmho.
amazing concept and beautiful design. the contriversial backstory on the photo just ads to the impact.
i vote: a+
