this is taken from a very famous issue of 'weird tales'a pulp/horror magazine from back on the 30's. i'd have to go back and look it up, but it's by a prominant illustrator of the time (a woman, i believe). whenever they do a compilation of artwork or stories from weird tales, they seem to always use this illustration.
i've later found out that a lot of these posters i credited to hugo (last name is 'poitin' - he became a yuppie real-estate salesman and later goy involved in some sort of 'est' cult) turned out often to have been put together collectively by the 'kids' at the metropolis working collectively. as i understand it, susan silver (later soundgarden's manager and chris cornell's wife) had a big hand in this one. also maire masco (later a bigwig at amazon.com). the metropolis logo was designed by helene silverman (who went on the design 'metropolis' magazine in ny and married gary panter). 'mr. epp' was the earliest traceable incarnation of what became mudhoney.
