jane higgins was the bassist in feats, who had jonathan poneman in it toward the end. she was married to the guitarist or whatever. she actually made her money designing porn video packaging. she split for los angeles, and i lost track of her.
if you talk to linda owens, please tell her i said hi, and have her contact me, ok? i'd really love to hear from her!
plantweed - another name on old sub pop record covers you need to look for is linda owens. she was one of the folks who kick-started that look for the label in a big way. she got burned out early and moved to indonesia (go figger).
she was from the rocket, too. some of the covers she did we green rivers' 'rehab doll' and soundgarden's 'screaming life'.
sometimes i go back and look at old issues and see people who started there and it still blows me away. great people, great talents, amazing names. i'm extremely proud to have been associated with such a sleazy rag of such merit.
everybody thought tad was going to be the next big name in seattle (after soundgarden and mudhoney and nirvana). then the 8-way santa fiasco hit (it may be the only record in history to be legally forced to pull it from distribution TWICE!). after that, the bad blood between sub pop and tad stalled their recording career for years. killed them, really.
actually, i have tried pushing that idea. sadly, the publishing world has a nyc myopia - a true provincialism - that sayz that if it wasn't from ny (especially in the publishing arts) or maybe san francisco, then it wasn't innovative or interesting. i've tried getting every magazine and publisher and historian i know to just look at the rocket, but they won't bother. jsut to get julie lasky to include the rocket as a chapter in my own book was a chore. i had to hardcore sell her on it before whe would do it. ny people think it's a small regional story of no interest to anybody in the 'big time'. their loss, i figure.
i once made a list of the amazing (now famous) designers, illustrators, writers, editors, photographers, cartoonists, etc. etc. that passed through the rocket and i had to quit at 150 names. burned out my barain cells to do it, too. yet, it was still just the tip of an iceberg.
