the strange thing about blackhappy was that during the whole time of their existance (as tracked by the rocket's "top ten") they were the biggest selling act of the year - even outselling nirvana. they did that crummy frat boy fake fishbone/red hot chilis/almost ska music that hadn't been hip for decades, especially in seattle. so, they never got signed. their privately released record outsold everything consistantly for years - even when it was only available in cassette! strange world...

  brian -

sorry, i guess "offensive" was the wrong term to use in reference to your comments. however, i was actually TRYING to be OFFENSIVE. you may also notice that the corporate sponsors (at this snoboard coprorate convention of hipsters) are being "jettisoned" from the explosion and (if you follow the big stupid arrow device) falling into "the drink" (which was the name of the club). what has any of this to do with spearhead or the greyboy allstars? absolutely nothing - to this day i've never heard what they sound like. i was aiming this at the ultra-blockhead hipster world of extreme sports. and what could be a more extreme and stupid sport than astronaut?

extreme sports is a classic example of corporate culture creating a fraudulent reality (extreme sports did NOT emerge from our culture, but was actually invented in corporate board rooms to sell products to young 'hip' consumers. i know, i was there in the beginning when K2 "invented" snoboarding.) so, i always look at the marketing of anything associated with that stuff as a sneaky way to call bullshit. the sad thing was that at this convention (held in las vegas - snoboarding capitol of the world), those few who even noticed it, thought it was "awesome, dude".

all the color and stuff was an attempt to make it all look "arty". the xeroxed type was just a convention of the current hip stylings that allowed them to read it and identify with the 'hipness, dude. gnarly". when in rome....

i did this in about 96-7, if that makes any difference. i was offensive first, maybe?

what's missing is the pink banana that was underneath. that's what made this classic. peel-off rules...

mud flap girls have always fascinated me. did you know that this image first began life as a joke in the drafting industry? waaaaay back before this was ever associated with trucking, it was a novelty item you could purchase in the drafting section of an arts supply store. it was made out of transparent green plastic and sold in the "french curves" section. just about every drafting department in america had one hanging around somewhere. i think those engineering nerds thought of it as a pinup or something. anyway, somewhere along the line somebody actually used it on a mudflap or something and it took off like a rocket and became the unofficial logo of trucker culture.

i love stuff like that....
