there is a difference between retro-sixties pailey beetle-boot bands and 'garage/punk' as it emerged in the nineties. frankly, i could never figger out what exactly what was 'garage about it... the mono men? dead moon? lord high fixers? fireballs of freedom? retro?
sure, you had yer 'silly surfers (the phantom surfers, untamed youth, etc.) and yer fake '? & the mysterians' (the makers, the chesterfield kings) and yer james brown/hot rod wannabes, but the core was total nasty punk rock.
i don't get that from the ny scene at all. they just seem to be a bunch of retro nostalgia acts in black dickies and tight pegged pants.
