holy war cadets were sort of a collective of crazy punks that sorta lived together. hugo was part of it. maire rented the house and they all crashed there. they put on shows and did posters and all kinds of crap. they even had a band called holy war cadets that gigged once. bad band, but a cool band of punks.

i always like "new york mining disaster, 1941" by the beegees. i always wondered where they came up with that one - it's so different from everything else they've ever put out.

the use of the typewriter on this reminds me of an old j.c. suares editorial cartoon i've always admired.

wings were an important element in much of egyptian design motifs (signifying the usual when it came to their pantheon of godz), but i've never seen a flying eyeball. i've looked for it (seems like a logical source) but i've never tripped across one. if you know of one and can get a post of it up, i'd love to see it. it would be pretty cool. it would count as definitive proof that von dutch lives - and has always lived. (there are many experts who think he was actually imhotep, the guy who designed the pyramids. however, there is some debate over the issue.)

tragically, it seems that dutch wasn't the first with the flying eyeball. a fella name of albert hurter was drawing them for disney back in the 1930's. hurter was a crazy old dude form the "old country" that they kept around to just make doodles and then they mined them for ideas. he was actually the guy to concepted the seven dwarves (how they looked). he also has crumb's "mr. natural" in his publsihed sketches as well.

hurter was pretty amazing. he basically came up with most of the truely cool disney stuff.

walt was just the boss (and the art director). he didn't draw much after the early 30's.

the flying eyeball was also on nose cone art during wwII.
