warhol's mom did SOME of his lettering. but she was too cranky and far away to do all of it, so nathan gluck learned how to copy her penmanship and did the bulk of it after a couple of months. but it was more fun to let everybody think andy's mom did it. nathan actually turned andy on to silkscreening, and also did most of his drawings after a while. he also did ALL of the rubberstamping work.
andy ran a design studio in the 1950's. he didn't make art until the early 60's, and even then he emplyed a design studio system, where he took credit for everybody else's work. he was the "art director", and his name went on the bottom line. he also made all the money.
that's how it's done. sorry to disillusion you at all.
there was a shop on 5th ave downtown seattle that was two doors - one entered into a asian grocery store and the other entered into a print shop. i think it was called "print 4 u". i forget the name of the guy who ran it, but it some chinese dude who barely spoke english. he'd print up whtever you had for like $35. any amount in the run. deadlines were always a problem (he forgot a lot) and color was a crap shoot. you got whatever he had on the press. at the end of the day, guys would go in to get their posters and the printer would be drunk and trying to clean his press (his shop was a pigstye). you'd have to remind him about the poster and that you needed it, so he'd make a paper plate and find some leftover paper and run it on the spot as he cleaned the press. you got the craziest split colors that way. then he'd forget to get your money.
total shit printer and the perfect punk rock poster dude.
this sposter was most likely designed by linda owens, who was the first designer at sub pop. she worked at the rocket, also. they never paid her and she quit. she did screaming life, fopp, (i believe) touch me i'm sick, and many others. then lisa orth took over and quit over no pay. then i came in and proved to be such a pain in the ass that bruce began to use dana higgins (and a couple other folks as onesy-twosy). eventually, we were all passed over and they hired jeff kleinsmith and hank trotter as their art staff. hank moved on and jeff somehow stuck it out.
