you may notice i mentioned m&m's in a previous post....
do you know who put the "m" on the "m&m's"? (shouldn't that be something every red blooded american should know?) it was an old chinese gentleman from the 'old country' who spoke little english. he was the mars family artist and did all of the packaging for their products (m&m's snickers, etc.). his name was "wang" or "wong" (i foget). i met his grand nephew.
the guy who designed possibly the most famous candy in america (next to hershey's) wasn't even from this country.
i say, let's stop them ALL at the border, NOW!! build more fences!!!
the wailers, the ventures, nirvana and soundgarden (who both lived in tacoma until they were rich enough to move to in mansions in seattle).
also, charlie manson learned how to play guitar and practice scientology from alvin "creepy" carpis (of the ma barker gang) at mcneil island penitentery here int acoma. his kid grew up here, too, when his ex wife and mother moved here to be close to him. in fact, meyer landky's kids grew up here under assumed names. the whole of tacoma was essentially a safe house for the old mob. but, don't get me started.
other tacoma inventions: the photobooth, almond roca, murphy beds.
i could go on and on, but you get my point. tacoma is the cultural center of the known universe, but nobody knows it..
the latest slant on the history of punk rock (primarily as told by english critics and historians) is that punk rock began with The Sonics in good old tacoma, wa. if you ever bother to listen to them, it's hard to contradict that view.
just another little item we in tacoma gave the world, along with m&m's, flying saucers, frisbees, men in black, bing crosby, ky jelly and wd40.
