"helvetica" comes from a name made up for an imaginary warrior race that were also very gentle and super smart (yet cannibals) who populated ancient switzerland. they didn't really exist, but they were the basis for the swis national mythology of the wise gentle warrior that they still think of themselves (hogwash). but, that's where the name for THAT typeface came from.
hobo was named after charlie chaplin. the typeface was used as title cards and dialog cards for silent films.
