Default Clay--what's up?! I can't link to gigposters images? IMPORTANT

Hi Clay!

So, here's the deal. I'm making a new website for Crosshair. Dan is no web guru (sorry Dan), so my plan was to use gigposters to display the images on his site. That way he doesn't have to figure out an ftp, another long list of links, etc, to embed into his site.

Here's what's happening, however:

Code:
<a href=""http://www.gigposters.com/posters/93060.jpg"><img src="http://www.gigposters.com/posters/93060.jpg" alt="Daniel Johnston" id="featured" title="Daniel Johnston"/></a>
That works. It displays the Daniel Johnston image on the site, but if you click on it you get this:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /posters/93060.jpg on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/2.2.6 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.6 OpenSSL/0.9.7a mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 PHP/5.2.5 Server at www.gigposters.com Port 80
From the fffound thread, I take it you don't like outsiders linking directly to your images. I kind of get that, but think about the following three items:

1. What if the actual artists (such as in this case) wants to link to the image?

2. Fffound generates work and press. I've been on there twice and both times my site traffic doubled.

3. The asshole "thief" can still display your images on their site, they just aren't clickable.

Just wanted to bring it up--no hard feelings. I'll have to come up with an alternate image service of some kind for Dan but it seems like the image permission thing should be all-or-none.

copy his images and host them somewhere else.

gigposters shouldn't have to support bandwith for other people's websites.

flickr is pretty great. but you could just get webhosting for like $9 a month through a multitude of places and you can avoid all the hassle and keep everything nice and neat.

Yes - hotlinking GigPosters.com images is disabled for many reasons.

The main reason is for copyright infringement.

It is illegal for Fffound to display any image on their site without permission from the artist. That site is bad news .. and won't last long.

There is also the bandwidth thing.

And .. I want people to post links to posters and come to this site to view them (the place where the designers give permission for their art to be shown).

Sounds good--not a problem. The more I thought about it the more I'd like for the site's traffic to stay local anyway--and I don't want to heap unnecessary bandwidth on you or take advantage of my favorite online resource unfairly.

p.s.--as an aside, am I the only 'artist' alive that could care less about copyright? Having said that I may also be the only person pussy enough to have bought a copy of Steal This Book.
