sites like ffffound are weird, like a repository of bookmarked images i guess. at least the work is linked back.

there was some other one, i can't remember the name, where you could save images or parts of images and make your own collages out of stuff/things/art. it was kinda wacky. people on etsy flipped the hell out, when their work popped up there, credited and linking back to their own sites or etsy stores. a couple of my posters were in a collage that a chick made of a "room", i thought it was kinda funny cool in a virtual Barbie Dream House way.

ZOMG™ uber alles

*edit: here is that site, Polyvore, great name for what it is actually: Discover or Start Trends - Polyvore

im kind of confused why, if you have a server for the site, you would host the images anywhere else...?

im kind of confused why you seem to be a fairly knowledgeable website maker yet fail to grasp the basic thinking behind hotlinking.

Daniel-because I was trying to come up with something more user-friendly. The client will be doing updates to this thing himself and I thought it would be nice to skip a second upload/link step to updating as he's uploading images of all his work to the gigposters.com servers anyway.

I think the mentions of flickr, imageshack, etc, came from individuals that assumed that I was linking to gigposters because of lack of personal server space, which wasn't the underlying issue. Having said that, I actually use flickr for a lot of my image hosting needs as I dig the firefox uploader plugin for it. It's easier than opening my ftp and navigating to the images folder. Just drag and drop and I've uploaded to flickr and, in a way, my website as well.

What is hotlinking and bandwidth theft?
Bandwidth theft or "hotlinking" is direct linking to a web site's files (images, video, etc.). An example would be using an <img> tag to display a JPEG image you found on someone else's web page so it will appear on your own site, eBay auction listing, weblog, forum message post, etc.
That's directly from the W3C. Fffound isn't hotlinking. They are hosting a copy of the image on their personal servers. They then include a text link to the site where the image was, er, fffound! Make sense? Do you define hotlinking differently?

LUNA!--my wife is going to LOVE polyvore! She's a fashion designer that has to make "inspiration boards" all the time--this is such a dope resource!

i wasn't referring to ffffound, i was talking about you wanting to borrow gigposters bandwidth.

I'm confused now. I get hotlinking--I was just letting Clay know that you can hotlink to the image, just not link an image. An <img src> will display a gigposters image on your site. That's hotlinking and you can do it. However, if you wrap that <img> in a link <a href="blahblah"> so you can click that image and be taken to it's gigposters page--you get a "no permission" 404. I was just double checking that that was his intention and I it wasn't my bad code leading to the 404s.

So, for example, this works:
<img src="http://www.gigposters.com/posters/TN_94345.JPG" title="The Gutter Twins"/ class="alignleft">

but oddly, this does not:
<a href="http://www.gigposters.com/posters/94345.jpg"><img src="http://www.gigposters.com/posters/TN_94345.JPG" title="The Gutter Twins"/ class="alignleft"></a>

And no low-blows about web design knowledge until you strip all those tables out your site yo! Just kidding

p.s.--sharon is hot
