One of the things I always struggle with is how to code my posters in my collection which is 1000+ prints. By giving each poster a 'poster code' I can access & browse my collection in a more efficient way (both the physical collection and the computer database).

Take this concept to this website. If you look at the main page you have a section with the latest comments. Great, but you can't figure out from that list to which poster it refers to. It is pretty much useless unless you find a way to refer to posters with a poster code. Imagine you could list the 'poster code' so people can see immediately to what poster artist and poster (year, number) it relates to.

This coding concept has worked very well for my Kozik collection cuz ever since sometime 1992 he started to use the 'year and item' number. Hence the 14th Kozik poster from 1994 which is numbered by Kozik as 94-14 is registered in my collection as KZ-94-14.

However, Derek Hess does not use a numbering system. Therefore I use codes like DH-96-Hammerhead.

None of this is perfect since Hess has made 2 Hammerhead posters in 1996 so I end up with DH-96-Hammerhead1 and 2.

What I am suggesting is to come up with some form of giving all posters on this site a poster code. It should include the artist name, the year and perhaps the bandname. Not sure. It would help the poster community like collectors to refer to posters making discussions easier. Is there already such a system? Has anyone have any comments on what they use personally? Art collectors with large collections and art dealers surely must have thought about this before, let alone the artists themselves. If there is no such standard poster code shouldn't we somehow try to come up with one?

I know it would result in a lot of work for the admin guys on this site to give a code to each and every poster but it could be well worth it. Think about that homepage again with the most recent comments.

Sounds kinda useless to me. Try clicking on the comment - then you can actually see the poster. A cryptic code means nothing to me.

Barry, fair enough but imagine there would be a code that easily identifies the artist. For instance KZ-XXXX (kozik) or DH-XXXX (derek hess) or JH-XXXX (Justin Hampton). That way I can skip comments about artists that I am not at all interested in and focus only on those that are of interest. Right now you would have to click on each and every comment on that list to see where they are referring to. There must be a better way.

I think this great site would be even better if one could easily focus on a particular artist.

This site is great for it builds a community for artists and collectors alike. It could also be of great use for research but for that you need to be able to refer to a particular poster without having to resort to statements like "that Frank Kozik poster with the big Indian on it for that Neil Young concert sometime in 1994". I really think that a standardized poster code would help the poster community (but heck I've been wrong before)

I understand your concern, but there is no way that I have time to ID every poster on the site. If you want an easy way to refer to a poster, you can look at the url. Each poster has a unique ID (only useful on this site though).

Have you tried out our Designers section?

It doesn't get anymore focused than that!

    Hope this makes sense.

    Hi Clay,

I completely understand that you don't have the time to give each and every poster a code. However, I would love to know what people think about it though since there must be collectors out there that face the same frustrations that I have with having hundreds and hundreds of posters lying around. would have been interesting to see what people do themselves, if they have suggetsions or hate/love the idea. There has been very little response to this so I guess I one of the very few that would love to see this happen.

As for focusing on an artist and pointing out the designer section, you're absolutely right. I wasn't thinking.

this sounds like the work involved would outweigh the benefits. let's leave the cataloguing for the museums.

    clay -

one thing i miss is an historicl perspective. is there any way you can ascribe dates with any of these shows? specifically, i mean years. it's strange seeing wes wilson alongside old punk circa '81 alongside kozik alongside speed. I know it would be a huge undertaking, but a valuable one.

I used to have dates on here. There are many features that used to be on the site that were removed.

Why? Because I could only find accurate dates for about 10% of the posters. Most posters will say Oct 15. What does that tell you? Nothing. No year, and a date is useless. And without dates on ALL the posters, its pretty much useless too. You can't sort by date if all the dates aren't known, etc..

Anyways ... I agree.. it would be nice, and originally it was on here.. nut now its gone.
