Dan Deacon is a live thing for me. Can't imagine listening to an entire CD of his music.

does anyone think that the "Of the Mountains" track sound a hell of a lot like the first track on the Akira soundtrack "Kaneda" which you can listen to here:

Or am I the only nerd in the room?

i brought this record up a lil while back in the electronic music thread. I've been listening to it since mid feb. and I was very pleased with how much more listenable all the way thru it was than 'spiderman'

and no billy, you are not the only nerd. I agree.

it's good! it seems very inspired by steve reich, and other percussion based 70's minimalist stuff. which isn't totally new territory or anything, but he does overlay and add a lot of interesting sample stuff, and synth trickwickery to prevent it from being a derivitive fest..The production is totally totally top notch. that waterwings track is really genious. I wish all the best for him he is the most awesome, thoughtfull and generous guy.
ooh. and all that player piano stuff makes me think of the composer Conlon Nancarrow, who did similar stuff way back when, but it's nice to hear similar ideas w/in an experimental pop context.
