    Default Unitus THRONES process thread

    Hey gang.

Thanks for all the positive feedback on my new Thrones poster. I was pretty excited to be a part of the series, as I've been a Thrones fan since I first saw Joe on tour with Slim/Witchypoo in the early 90s.

At that show, Joe took the stage with a full-on mountain-man beard and long scraggly hair, and a giant witches hat. So, that intial visual impression served as the basis for my poster.

So, I started with a nice, loose pencil-drawing. Just hashing out where things are gonna be, but realizing I'll tighten up all the details in the inking process.

    Detail shot:

After inking, I scan the black and white line-art into photoshop.

I had purchased some fancy colored paper for this job, so I worked on the seperations in color. I usually only do two color on white or off-white paper, and will often work on my seps in B&W (to keep my file size down).

I printed out my films, then exposed them on our light-table. (here's a pic sans screen, so you can see the table.)

Once exposed, the screen goes into the washout booth. Hard water will knock the exposed emulsion out of the screen creating a stencil.

    Detail of the stencil:

Then it's on to registering the screen on the printing table. I printed light to dark (yellow, gray, dark blue).

Since all of my Thrones music is on vinyl, I thought I'd jam out to something equally appropriate while I printed...

    First color printed and racked.

    Second color down...

And finally, third. I was originally going to make the third color a split-fountain from dark blue to dark red, but I thought it would be too subtle to bother with, plus it was getting late, and I was tired. (These are the type of decisions you make when you print your own stuff...)

    Finished poster!

Joe's got a handful of these he's been selling since his Minneapolis stop, so head on out and pick one up.

Or, you could snag one from yours truly in the GP classifieds.

I got a hook-up with another local screenprinter that has a large-format film printer.

I need to get off my ass and make a vac table. I'm so lazy.

Seriously cool poster, dude. And, the process thread rocks.

It's nice to know there are people out there doing it the same way (sketch, then inking on PS/AI.) It sucks not to have original lineart, but it's so much faster to do.
