    Default Gallery commission rates...

What is/do you think the average commision rates for displaying art:

    1. Solo show in gallery
    2. Group show in gallery
    3. One-off group show in space (ie: club, coffee shop, boutique)

Have you ever refused a show because of a stupid high commision?

Most places take 50%. Some galleries that I worked with in the past only took 30 or 40%.

i've taken 20-50% in the past. just depends on what you're selling, the prices of the pieces and who the artist is.

At 40-50%, that is why art is so expensive in galleries vs. buying on your own time.

    It all makes sense now.

Still, it is a high rate for a non-known artist trying to get exposure. A newbie putting out thousand dollar pieces to get a "feel good profit" is almost pretentious.

this issue popped into my mind the other day, and wondered if there is any concensus to how it works:

i've got a show coming up at a gallery where i've had stuff hanging for a few months, and have made some nice money, but this will be the first time 90% of the work there will be mine...if someone commissions me to do a piece, either while talking to them at the show, or sometime after the show, am i expected to give the gallery a cut of the cost? even though, technically, the piece will never be hung at that gallery, i still made money through the show that they set up.
