Beefheart always falls flat when he tries to do straight r&b vocals. But I still love most of that record; some of it (Long Neck Bottles, Low Yo Yo, Circumstances) has a great fucked up early-ZZTop sound that he doesn't do on anything else.

Do you have Strictly Personal? That one is intense; it came out right before Trout Mask and it's the same Magic Band. It's his "psychedelic record."

I've tried getting into Beefheart for years, but he's just never "clicked" w/ me.

I love me some Beefheart, but it can be hit or miss.
