THE LAST HUFFER:
THE FINAL SHOW BY SEATTLE PUNK ROCK INSTITUTION GAS HUFFER AT THE COCODILE CAFÉ ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 14
After 16 years of intoxicating rock ‘n’ roll, Gas Huffer will inhale one last time on January 14 at the Crocodile Café – the site of some of their most memorable performances. Joining Gas Huffer will be Tacoma’s seminal garage punk combo Girl Trouble, with the comic novelty duo Canned Ham from Vancouver, B. C. acting as masters of ceremonies.
Over the course of their long career, Gas Huffer released seven full length LPs as well as countless singles and contributions to important anthologies, recorded for labels like Empty, Epitaph, Estrus, Sub Pop and Justice. The band has toured extensively across North America, Europe, Japan and New Zealand. Gas Huffer became internationally acclaimed for their clever lyrics, searing timbre and cartoon aesthetic.
The end of the band’s run was hastened by drummer Joe Newton’s relocating to New York City, where, following five years in Seattle as Art Director at the Stranger, he accepted a parallel position at Rolling Stone magazine. Guitarist Tom Price – a veteran of proto-grunge pioneers the U-Men – was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, limiting his ability to tour. (Though he will continue to occasionally perform fronting the garage band Kings of Rock alongside Huffer bassist Don Blackstone).
The show on Saturday, January 14 promises to be a lively celebration of Gas Huffer’s illustrious past, combining old favorites with selections from their recent release “Lemonade for Vampires” on Estrus Records. Guests can select souvenirs from the Gas Huffer Garage Sale, featuring a collection of CDs, vinyl, shirts, posters and ephemera from the past and present. All proceeds from the sale will benefit the Northwest Parkinson’s Foundation. Admission to the concert is only $8. Prior to the concert, Gas Huffer will appear live on KEXP’s Audioasis with host Lisa Wood at 6
