    Throw a few coins or other 100% opaque materials down on a screen and burn it -- if you get a good washout, it's your positives.

    We had the exact same problems when we were printing positives on a shitty deskjet printer. If light is leaking through a weak positive, it'll slightly expose the emulsion beneath it, which makes it harder to wash out.
