The Goodfoot will have an art opening last Thurs March 28th, from 5-12 This months artists are Emily Bates, Heide Davis, Lea Keohane and Nik Orr. The show will be up until April 22nd
Emily Bates, an acrylic painter originally from England and now residing in Portland, grew up on an estate in the English countryside. After moving to America in her late teens and obtaining her bachelor's*degree*in Art and Art History, she began more conscientiously incorporating her interest in the Victorian era and the English flora and fauna into her paintings. Textural backgrounds and demure subjects are reminiscent of her childhood memories on the estate, when she would wander in the woods hoping to catch a glimpse of a secretive fox or deer. Then when the rain battered down and the wind howled she would take refuge in the stately home, creeping around its many corridors and grand rooms, thinking of the original family that lived there in a time long-passed.
Heide Davis is a painter living in Portland, Oregon. She's originally from Texas where she attended the Art Institute of Houston and Glassell School of Art, MFAH. Her work as a specialty finisher and muralist has influenced her use of materials and encouraged experimentation in mixed media.*She*paints with tempera and oils to create abstract landscapes and figurative work. Her current paintings range from young women*on the city streets in vaguely threatening situations to*Martian landscapes and spacemen inspired by the recent Rover photos.
Lea Keohane is a working artist and mom in Portland, OR.* She arrived from Denver, CO, in 1997 and earned her B.A. in Drawing, Painting, and Printmaking from Portland State in 2002.* Lea works in layers of mixed media on wood, allowing the wood grain to both inform the piece and to shine through at the end. "What if you could hold your heart in your hands?* If everything you love and feel passionate about could be personified in a piece of art that reminds you every single day how much you are worth? This is the direction I am taking in my work.* I want you to see yourself in the way that I see you.* Incredible.* Beautiful in your own skin. Full of life and love, gratitude, and imperfect perfection.* Think of the person you love more than anyone else in the world, how they look to you, how you can see them and all of their potential with wonder and amazement and compassion.* Now turn these feelings on yourself.* This is how I want you to feel.* You are beyond amazing."
When Nicholas Orr started college he began to understand why he loved art as much as he did; He could use his skills to tell stories and convey emotions for people to live in. He majored in Illustration and got his BFA in 2002. After graduating he moved to Los Angeles, California where he went on to become a freelance Graphic Designer and Artist. He spent his time fine-tuning his craft and figuring out what story he wanted to tell with it. After five years of shows and design work Nicholas decided to make another big change and moved to Portland, Oregon in 2007. He is now starting to gather up his knowledge and experience to make a new life for himself.
