    Default Poster Road Case Suggestions

Hey! I was wondering if those of you that travel with posters a lot would mind sharing links to the types of cases you use. I'm in the market for one, and though the duct-taped-together-French-boxes method got me to Barcelona & back, I'd like something a little more practical in the future.

    Thanks!
    Shawn

Dan McAdam turned me on to these:

    Case Kits

You might have seen a few of us in BCN with these cases. They'll make em custom to your specs.

billy, did you go with the level 1 style?

did you add the interior foam protection yourself?

how heavy are they based off of what a cardboard box of the same contents would be?

I got the Level 3 case, which comes with the 1/4" foam already in there. The ball corners are awesome.

The Level 4's look nice also, with 1/2" foam.

They're definitely heavier than a cardboard box. I think mine's around 12 lbs empty.

I ordered the 4" thick one at a size big enough to host both 20x26 and 18x24 (I got them to send me some additional foam pieces for adapters - larger prints on bottom > add adaptor > add 18x24 and smaller prints). What they actually sent me was the 5" case, though, because the recessed handle takes up too much room to fit on a 4" case. That's really about as big as you can go IMO, or your case will be too heavy to check as luggage.

It's also a heavy MF when it's full, and it was a bitch carrying it. Get one of those cheap travel dollies if you haven't already, or order the case with casters.

My case was around $200. But checked as luggage, it's way cheaper than shipping my crap back and forth.

Level 5! Gets you the ball corners and sturdier hardware.
You absolutely must have recessed butterfly latches. Otherwise the clasps will get opened or knocked off and broken very quickly and your posters spread around somewhere between home and Hamburg.

When you get a custom case made. Check a few different airlines that you think you will be flying with and see what their regs are on size limitations for oversize bags. I ran into an issue where half of my trip my case was fine and the other half it was considered oversize. Some of those over size fees are killer.

Alright, I'm thinking of getting one as well. 5" seems like a good depth. I'm sick of boxes and their ability to be very water absorbent.
