    Default transparent shadows

heres something Ive never done and wanted to hear from someone that they have. successfully.
have you ever blocked in your colors and then used black - extended to be transparent - as the shadow areas for ALL the other colors - using waterbased inks?

Im dying to try this, but I want to hear from someone that it worked. If so, im psyched. tell me how you did it.

Yes. It totally works. Just use a LOT of base.
I usually do something like this after or just before printing the keyline. I just tape a blank film down on what I've printed and ink in the shadows with an opaque film pen(s). Works like a charm.

Like Justin said. Works great. Use a tiny amount of color in transparent base...just drops.
I'm a big fan of blues, purples and lavenders for shadow tones, instead of neutral grays.

Crosshair- I'll have to try that. All I ever use is black for this. That never occurred to me. Dang. Smart dude, you!

I'd like to second Dan's recommendation to use some colors in there. I never print straight black, and if you mix a little bit of blues or violets or something in with a super transparent shadow tone, it gives you a much more nuanced, richer color.
NIBOT, here's a poster I did with this technique:

It's a four color print, and the third screen is a split fountain of a transparent warm violet/off-black (the clouds) with a very transparent sort of cool blue/off-black for the shadow cast on the house and ground.
The keyline on this is about as close as I'll get to straight black for line art because I needed to make sure it popped enough over the dark tones in the third screen.

I like this effect alot and used it kind of subtle in this poster . . . a tiny bit of warm mud color with alot of extender base to create the drop shadows.
