would you sell my house for me at no charge if i promise to write about you on my website and give you a few shirts?

design work does not work that way either.

    Andy,
I appreciate your defense of the design industry. I have lots of friends who make their living this way.
We're a small, local company looking to help the career of a student or yet undiscovered artist. Obviously, we wouldn't be a good fit for your company.
And just so you know, if your house didn't sell, I wouldn't get paid jack. So yes, I do work for free. And if I wasn't willing to do it, the company wouldn't be where it is today.
    Good luck in Portland.
    Sam

Even if they win, they don't receive fair compensation. Not quite the same as selling a house.

I'm all for people working pro bono in good situations, but if you put a call on a forum to find entries then it's a fair bet that the exposure side of things is a bit lacking. :-/

students make student work, for a grade. if they do it well, they can find a decent job.

commercial businesses pay for commercial art. if they pay a good designer they gain visibility, and hopefully more business.

nobody here is interested in your contest.

Ask one of your many friends to do it for free then.

Want to "help" the career of a student locally? There are 3 great local design schools full of students that would jump at the chance. Contact MCAD, CVA or UofM School of DHA and get a student to do the work. Hell, I know people who teach at those schools who have assigned projects like this to their classes.

You'll find no appreciation for spec work here.
