BigBrain...Grumpy's...tonight!
Zak Sally, local publisher, musician, and tireless promoter of unheralded writers and cartoonists, is finally plugging his own work, the rambunctious fever dream Sammy the Mouse (Fantagraphics Books). Sammy follows the exploits of the titular mouse and his cohorts: Puppy Boy, the duck H.G. Feekes (who mixes the personality of W.C. Fields with the look of Captain Ahab), a skeletal boy called Him, and the Angel of Death, who's moonlighting in a liquor store. These creatures abuse themselves, bicker, and observe their world (itself a hybrid of Dr. Caligari and Dante's Purgatorio) with detached bemusement. Fantagraphics has added Sammy the Mouse to its Ignatz portfolio, the acclaimed series of international titles intended to broaden readers' horizons with the most mind-fucking stories imaginable. Celebrate its release at Big Brain Comics from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and then stumble down the block to Grumpy's, where Sally will exhibit more of his myriad talents with TOGPTFFSOTWOTERATSYOA, or, Three Old Guys Play The First Five Songs Off The Wipers' Over The Edge Record And The Song Youth Of America. Free. 6 p.m.
