Default Wunderground: Providence, 1995 To The Present

I thought you all might want to see this. RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) is having a poster show this fall that will mount 2000 Providence RI gigposters made from 1995-2006.
I'm psyched to see it all catalogued and RISD seems to be working hard to make this happen the right way. I lent a few things for the show, but I'm more psyched to see all the stuff I missed.

Below is the release from RISD's site.

    FORTHCOMING: September 15, 2006-January 7, 2007

WUNDERGROUND: PROVIDENCE, 1995 TO THE PRESENT

PROVIDENCE, RI — For the past decade, Providence has been the site of a radical underground art scene, giving rise to a multi-faceted, unbridled aesthetic that is as distinct as it is influential. The work earns international press ranging from music and fine art to comic and shelter publications, yet the artists maintain their underground life-as-art practices. This fall, the Museum presents Wunderground: Providence, 1995 to the present, an exhibition celebrating Providence’s intersection of art and music.

This watershed exhibition consists of two parts, representing present and past: Shangri-la-la-land and Providence Poster Art, 1995-2005. Organized by Judith Tannenbaum, Richard Brown Baker Curator of Contemporary Art, the exhibition is conceived by a core group of eight artists: Mat Brinkman, Brian Chippendale, Jim Drain [RISD ’98, Sculpture], Leif Goldberg [RISD ’97, Film, Animation, Video], Jungil Hong [RISD ’99, Ceramics], Xander Marro, Erin Rosenthal [RISD ’98, Film/Animation/Video] and Pippi Zornoza [RISD ’01, Printmaking].

For Shangri-la-la-land the eight artists will construct a sculptural installation especially for the Museum’s soaring 30-foot Main Gallery, transforming it into a fantastic landscape loosely based on the idea of a village. Taking the raucous interiors of such Providence artists’ collectives as Fort Thunder and Dirt Palace as a guide, bets are on for a lively spectacle.

Providence Poster Art, 1995-2005 will display, floor-to-ceiling, some 2,000 screen-printed posters advertising rock shows, art exhibitions, and community events held in Providence since 1995 — a comprehensive timeline of the signature creative activities of the underground’s last decade: silk-screening and noise music. Over 200 artists created these colorful, graphic, cartoony posters for happenings at off-the-radar venues such as Redrum, Box of Knives and Pink Rabbit. Headsets with recordings of live shows will pepper the galleries.

    publication
Wunderground will be accompanied by a full-color, illustrated catalogue with a foreword by celebrated artist and designer Gary Panter. Two major texts, written by Judith Tannenbaum and Providence gallerist Sara Agniel, will contextualize Providence’s unique art scene. Artists, musicians, writers, and students who created and witnessed it offer shorter texts-reminiscences, anecdotes, and personal perspectives providing a kaleidoscopic portrait of a time and place. The catalogue is being produced in collaboration with the award-winning art director Dan Nadel of PictureBox, Inc.

Sounds great. I'm moving back to the area this fall, and I'll have to go check it out.

I know I've been DYING to get a couple posters from shows I attended when I went to school there. The only one I was smart enough to get at the show was a Strokes one in the late summer of 2001. Still looking for Wilco and Smashing Pumpkins posters from Lupo's shows I went to.

    cheers,

    -the Jesus

wow, this is gonna be a kickass show, gotta get up there in the next few months. Looks like this show is the brainchild of the old Fort Thunder crew. I went to risd from 2000-04 and the poster scene up there caused me to become a postermaker. Seeing the Melted Men at the Fort in 2000 was a real trip. The place was turned into a labyrinth and at the end of one tunnel were free silkscreened monster masks if you signed the guest book.

I saw this on a Providence messageboard today, RISD is looking to contact all the artists whose work is in the Wunderground show. I figured I'd pass this along in case anybody on the list checks GP. Pedini and Kozik are on the list, I wonder if RISD had a hard time finding Frank.

    9/7/06 From the RISD Museum:

    Hi all,

We are trying to reach a LOOOOONG list of artists whose work is represented in the poster exhibition at the RISD Museum. Over 2,000 posters were lent by 37 poster collectors, and we've identified about 180 of the artists who made them, but only have contact info for about 30.

The show opens on September 15th, at 7pm. It is called "Wunderground: Providence, 1995 to the present" and has two parts, the poster show, and a new installation conceived by 8 core artists.
    Here's a link:
    http://www.risd.edu/museum_exhibitio..._onview_92.cfm

There is an opening night party (Friday, the 15th, 7-10pm), and we'd like all the artists represented to know about it. Check the list and pass it on, if you can.

If you are on this list, and haven't been in touch with me yet, please write to me at: mallison@risd.edu.

Here's the list of known artists in the show. About 30 of the folks below already know, and possibly more:

Sarah Rentz interned with me around '95.
I went out for her graduate show and hung out at Fort Thunder.
Providence is creepy, but loaded with talent.
