There's still plenty of great punk bands around. If you get away from the metallic stuff and dig in a little deeper, the hardcore scene is blazing right now. There's a band from New Jersey called Tear It Up who are fucking brilliant. Shit sounds like Black Flag mutated with Poison Idea in a modern context. Their album "Nothing to Nothing" is one of the best hardcore albums I have ever heard.
Another great hardcore band is from Cleveland called 9 Shocks Terror. Total 80s japanese hardcore worship with a little bit of Raw Power thrown in for good measure. They've got a bunch of stuff out that'll kick your ass.
I never got into the Bouncing Souls until one of my friends started to roadie for them quite a few years ago. He invited me down to a show and I was blown away. They aren't the best on record, but if you can imagine the energy on stage while you listen to an album, they're phenomenal. Really good live band.
I saw some of the first Anti-Flag shows in the early to mid 90s. Those guys used to drive into Cleveland from Pittsburgh all the time to play. Great guys with plenty of conviction, and they get that energy going on stage as well.
Lots of good stuff out there. It's about a 1/1,000 ratio of good to bad. But, there's so much crap out there now that you know there's some good shit floating around still.
