    Default SHELLAC

Saw Mr. Albini's band last night in scenic Gloucester City, NJ. One of the weirdest places I've seen a show. It was on the third floor of this Irish Pub, a big banquet hall with hardwood floors and 20 foot cielings. Really echoey, but it kicked lotsa ass.
The band did these question and answer bits between a few songs. VERY entertaining. I highly recommend going out to see this machine in flight if you see them coming to your town.

Completely off subject, I think the weirdest venue I'd ever seen a show at was in philly. Boss Hog was coming, to play at Upstairs at Nick's, who just closed its doors(sniffle). So the show got moved to the upstairs banquet hall at Bookbinder's, one of the oldest and most expensive restaurants in the city.
Like the Shellac show, the space had hardwood floors and high cielings. But the kicker was the HUGE chandelier that hung in the middle of the room. Like ten feet wide. Above the stage, a larger than life-size portrait of George Washington, staring down over Hollis Queens' supabooty. Amazing. And those stupid rollout bars.

    got a weird venue?

weirdest show.....well it could have been Ace Freley opening for Wendy O Williams....there was some punk band, then he comes out and proceeds to do a sort of Yngie Malmsteen thing all by himself for over an hour. The place was packed with hostile 1984 era punks who proceeded to through everything they had at him but he just kept on noodling....

or maybe the GG Allin 'show'...he was supposed to play at a club, but was such an ass that the club kicked him out..some brain surgeon invited him to play at his house, so like 200 people go to this guys house, they set up all the crap in the living room, one the first 'note' all the power blew up, GG drop his pants, crapped all over himself and then started busting out all the windows with the guys furniture. everyone sort of freaked out and we like peered threough the windows and shit as the house got destroyed. thje poor sap whose house it was was like standing there crying real tears...fuckin hilarious......

Steve Albini and his frankenstein that is shellac are fucking amazing. i think Steve needs to do a self-motivation spoken word album. Seeing them live is like a religious experience. It doesnt get much better than watching the reverand Albini yell at god.

Shellac played a show in minneapolis called(i think):

    "A Fantastic Voyage with Shellac"

it was done on an old mississippi river paddleboat and they had these cool 1920's style tickets for the show. i was way sick and didn't go, still kicking myself. before that they did "breakfast with shellac" at first avenue at 9am in the morning...ick they very rarely do normal shows here

They're playing a show here next weekend I think in a VFW hall in a nice little burb in Illinois. About 10 minutes or so from St.Louis. Would love to go, but I think it's sold out. You have to have your tickets in advance. They won't sell them at the door. And you can only buy them at one place. And rumor has it that whether or not you get the tickets is on how cool and "deserving" the guy selling them thinks you are. Don't know how true that is. I know a couple of people who got them and they're not really punk rock looking or anything.

I saw Shellac about 8 years ago I suppose at this place called The Gargoyle Room that is on the campus of Washington University. A rather hoity toity school for rich kids. Art can tell you a good story about them. It was Shellac and Mt.Shasta. O God how those two kicked ass. And yes Albini was doing the question and answer thing. And since the show was predominantly rich kids who thought they were being clever, his answers were very sarcastic and well, Albiniesque. Great show.

Just stepped foot in the Gargoyle for the first time since this pat Sunday. Saw the VonBondies and a very cool band from England called The Kills. Yet another amazing two piece. The VonBondies rocked too. They were one of my first few shows. Had to go show some support.

Yes I did, Chloe. They were incredible. Really changed my outlook on music. I had always liked Sonic Youth. And here comes a band that uses the noise and dichord, but flat out rocked! They didn't have the arty pretense of most of the SkinGraft or other noise bands. They were very rock and roll. But at the sametime a giant middle finger to what people think rock and roll is. Loved them. Still listen to So Who's the Hottie? every once in awhile.
