Are you seeing anybody play at sxsw?

I never see any bands - last year hearing Echo and the Bumnymen through the wall at Flatstock was pretty much the only music I checked out.

This year I don't even know who's playing except Fucked Up - who I'd really like to see, but 1am is kinda tough for an old man like me...

i'll catch up with touring or local friends at day parties. those are the best anyway. at noon, everyone else is still hungover. and nothing better than having a beer in the sun right after breakfast tacos while people watching and listening to a great band 10 ft away.

Do you guys get wristbands, or just find parties, or what?

I tried to see paint it black a couple years ago; there was no getting in and I didn't want to stand outside in the heat to hear them.

How does a square like me figure out where bands are playing?

I never plan to see bands... never do the wristband thing.
I usually end up seeing a few, slipping into somewhere or other, or wandering into parties.
But I'm mainly all about just dorking out with the rest of the dorks.

They have little books that schedule all of "official" shows with venue/time info and all that. They're floating around all over, you'll end up with one. Otherwise befriend a smelly kid, they always seem to know what's up.

Or just walk in any direction anywhere. Odds are you'll hit a decent show.

last year my band declined the wristsbands so we could just get paid instead. on top of the 2-3 shows a day we were playing we hit another 4-5 free parties

i just looked at a few music blog i like , and wrote down the parties i wanted to go to in my day planner & also checked the myspace pages of all the bands I wanted to see so i could see what else they were doing

and then of course as i kept bumping into friends & bands i kept getting flyers or info for other shows/parties


i got to see tons of my favorite bands playing house parties for free , it was super fun. the best though was tyvek , us giirls and psychedelic horseshit playing on some bridge at like 4am. so don't get that experience in a club.

i posted about wet hair specifically for you! shawn reed from wet hair does really cool gig posters too and runs a micro label called night people that'd be right up your alley.
he puts out mostly tapes (with glorious artwork) but also a fair bit of vinyl.
we're actually going to be doing a large scale collab installation with the wet hair dudes
