I saw this show last night in H-Town, wasn't really expecting much but I am a fan of the music and the legend of the Tombs. I was pleasantly surprised to get a great punk rock show full of energy from well prepared musicians. A heads up for anyone in Austin as they are playing Emo's tonight.
For anyone that isn't aware, they were a pre-punk band from Cleveland circa 1975 that was only around for less than a year. Some of the music they wrote in that short time is the stuff of legends: Sonic Reducer, 30 Seconds over Tokyo, Final Solution, Down in Flames, Ain't it Fun, What Love Is et al.The Tombs split up and members fromed the Dead Boys, Pere Ubu and others. One of the key founding members, Peter Laughner drank himself to death soon thereafter. This past year, David Thomas (Pere Ubu), Cheetah Chrome (Dead Boys), Richard Lloyd (Television), Craig Bell and Steve Mehlman got together to play some of the music and this tour sprang up.
Anyone who make comparisons to the Doors reunion or the many final tours for the Who just doesn't get it. This is a revisitation of the music these guys shared with each other but never got to previously share it with the population. This isn't a big money tour, I saw them in a bar with 300 people tops.
Do yourself a favor and check these guys out, here is some other info about their non-reunion.
