You'd be surprised. Although the majority of people can't do this, there are a few that release posters and other things that are able to make a living from it. This is a some-what self-supporting group of people. Especially when EB gets mixed in.
When it comes to your line weight and playing with solid perfectly inked lines vs. ratty pencil drawings, there are ways to execute both. Below is a silkscreen that i think uses a messy edge and is still completely successful. Just play with your subject-matter and what you do before you get to your final.
If you had spent a few more hours on the wolf and experimented with different styles before going straight to the final you might have been happier with the final image. It's never bad to just have something not work and revisit it over and over until you're happy. Try going out and drawing on location. You will do a lot of things that wont work, but if you keep going and push through it there will be at least one image that you will feel good about.
