    Default Rubylith for a dummy

I was just wondering the whole process behind cutting rubylith, I have a vague understanding, but just the basics. The light won't expose through the rubylith so you cut out where you want the ink to go, but how do you transfer the little pieces to the screen and keep them all in position, or do I have it all wrong?

You use the rubylith as a film.
it comes as two layers - red on clear
you cut through one layer (the red) and peel away
whatever you don't want to print.
Exposing the screen is a photographic process.

leave what you want to print on the clear backing.

    peel what you dont' want.

Tape the sheet over your cutting guide or film you are cutting to.

    use a sharp knife

practice a bit to get the 'amount' of pressure - enough to cut through the red, not enough to cut thorugh the backing.

You can stick it back down sometimes if you screw up.

Avoid sticking the knif in your eyeball, that hurts.

I caught a major leg artery with an exacto at 5am after cutting all night once.
    It bled like crazy.

sorry to hear that steve. exacto wounds are never pretty.

i got a HUGE roll of rubylith from an artstore in baltimore, they said it had been sitting there for years and to take it for 35 bucks, and i gladly obliged.
it originally sold for over $200..

just a note of interest: Rubylith is why alpha channels in photoshop are colored red by default when overlayed with other channels. At least, that's my theory. I like to think that I'm cutting rubylith when i'm mucking with channels. Only, I can't really cut myself with the mouse, so I guess it's not as fun.

I know this print shop here that I visit sometimes that uses huge rolls of ruby run through a plotter, and often large strips are left behind as scrap, and they give it to me, or sometimes I just check the dumpster, they are plenty big for my needs and I love cutting ruby too! Whee!
