Default Home made exposure unit poll

I am curious of others home made exposure unit setups-emulsion-burn time.

Especially how close your bulbs are to the glass and your burn times??

I made a 6 bulb UV Blacklight unit. Bulbs are 2" from the glass. No vac blanket, just weights on foam/wood

    I use Ulano QX-1 Emulsion

    With NON-halftone burns...I burn at 20 seconds
With Halftone burns.....I burn at 15 seconds.

Here is my ass kicker....I think my bulbs are too close to the glass because sometimes I get like a "hot spot" in the center of the screen were it does not wash out...but only with a halftone burn.

    So, what is your set-up?

8 blacklight tubes, 1.5" OC apart, 2" from the glass. I had basically the same exposure as you did, but then changed to QX1 and now 110s are at 1 minute and 200+ are at 40 seconds

last night i was shooting with my two BBA photoflood bulbs(usually a 15 minute exposure) when they both crapped out within the first minute or so of exposure. i decided "what the hell" and swapped in two 100 watt lightbulbs i had around the house. walked away for an hour and a half, made some dinner, watched an espisode of Lost, went back and washed it out. Perfect exposure!

i love it when half-assing it works

    I use 3 500-watt halogen fixtures (cheap!)
about 30" away from the glass.
    5 minutes with QTX.

I swtiched from QTX to QX1 because it's almost a third of the price, it holds up better against water when washing out, it's one part and exposes fast and you get great detail. With my light setup I have done many a simulated process 50 LPI screen with little to no trouble. Film output is very important for halftones, if you dots are weak then they will fill in.

I used store bought flo. ballasts with the reflectors, I just bent the reflectors so they are 90 degrees and maybe that reduces some of the light scatter. I think with a full bank of flo tubes the closer to the glass the better, you just want to avoid hot spots and cool spots in the exposure
