Default mesh count conversions?

does anyone have an idea how to convert from a mesh # of 8xx (or any other xx size) to threads/inch? is there some sort of quick conversion? i've looked just about everywhere for the last 5 minutes to no avail. my last resort is to take a piece into work and count it on a microscope with a micrometer, which i have no interest in doing.

huh? if it's a per centimeter count 1 inch = 2.7 CM or 270mm.

so...300 mesh = 831 thread intersections per square inch.

hmmm...maybe i'm missing something...the mesh i bought only had a listing of 8xx (the stuff i had bought previously was 10xx, i think), no indication of threads/inch or threads/cm. do the x's indicate cm? i'm assuming it's an archaic measurement system.

what are you trying to figure out? and why? i think i may be able to help. are you trying to figure out the number of mesh openings or trying to convert the mesh count?

the x's indicate the strength of the fabric. the more x's the stronger it is.

ahhh...half way there. xx=mesh strength. the "8" can't be the thread count/inch though, as there are a hell of a lot more than 8 threads/inch. basically, i'm trying to print a halftone image, so i want to make sure that the mesh i have can handle it. i have an idea of what thread count will work with the ellipse size, however i need the conversion for 8xx into threads/inch to see if i'm in the right range.

Go back to where you bought your mesh and ask what the mesh count is...

If you bought it at a art supply store like Pearl then I'm betting it isn't any higher than 156. It's probably 110 even.

If it's 156, then you can get away with 45lpi...barely.

It it's 110...you're lower than 30lpi with good films and a good exposure unit.

it should have the mesh count stamped along the edge. if you want to print good halftone dots you want like 220 or higher.

or like just take a nap and forget about the whole goddamn thing.

Frank likes to print 85lpi on a 110. Ask him about it.
