Default Official Screen/Frame Thread

Where can you buy good, solid frames for screenprinting that are bigger than the standard textile requirements?

And how many of you use roller frames? I can't afford the tension meter, but in the long run it seems it would be helpful to stratch my own screens.

I'm starting this thread in the interest of having an easy-to-find resource.

I'd say call a screenprinting supply company and have them make aluminum frames for you.

We use both wooden frames and Newman roller frames, which ever is the ready to go at the time. You can good wood frames pre-streached from GM Graphics. Pretty cheap too. We use the 23x31 inch ones and after a year we have to finally get a couple of new ones so they last a long time. The mesh comes anywhere from 83 on up for about 20-25 bucks a piece. -www.gmcompanies.com -
Roller frames rock but are kind of $$$ !

Shit, you guys are all pros, whats a tension meter? Heres what I do. First I just rent a miter saw from home depot and buy a bunch of those 2"x2" pieces of pine to make my frames any size I want. It's real cheap. You can even water seal them bastards to keep warping down.

This might be hard to explain but to stretch a tight screen I cut the mesh about 4" larger than the outside edge of the frame. I staple one edge with about a million staples making sure the screen is pulled tight along the edge I'm stapling. Then I staple the opposite side of the screen but to get it real tight I take an areosol can and lay it next to the frame underneath the 4" mesh overhang. I grab the can and the mesh tightly (sandwiching the mesh between my hand and the can) and twist the can with the mesh away from the frame. I move up the side of the frame stapling as I pull sections tight. These tend to loosen up after a while but I've been using the same screens for over a year now with few problems.

I don't know if this makes any sence or not but it's a way to make nice tight screens on a minimal budget.

Am I the only one who has this serious urge to coat a screen door and see if it'll work?

j- I used to stretch my own mesh, no thanks! And I waste enough time making frames to hang artwork in, I'll leave the carpentry to someone else.

'Course, I could buy a pneumatic stretcher, but $$$!

Richie- I used a screen window once, it sorta works... if you're printing a big square or something.
