i accidentally printed a trans layer (mostly trans purple) over part of my black keyline then had to go over the whole thing with an open screen of pure trans. please let me know! would love to try it out this way. thx!
Farley, I totally missed this question until now. Sorry about that!
Yes, printing trans black colors over the keyline definitely seems to leave that glossiness you described. I think the trick is to either print it just before the keyline, or sep the transparent black in a way where the glossiness won't be obtrusive or problematic (for example, leaving significant portions of the keyline showing through, having shadows butt up against--but not on top of--the key, etc.). I printed some trans shadows over one of the keylines in a recent art print, and you can only really notice the glossiness over the key when really examining it. If I take a few steps back, it's really not noticeable at all.
I think the glossiness can kind of be cultivated in a way, too. It's little things like that which can make screens prints more fun to look at.

It gave a great 'light beams at night' effect. Not exactly the specific effect you may be looking for, but the print kicked ass and used the same approach with a unique twist... anyone remember who/what poster it was? Link/example if you do?
Been a bit or two, but came by it again today: GigPosters.com - Big Business - Tweak Bird
