The images themselves, or just the ambiguously meaningful captions?

I use this method in almost all my prints now. It basically multiplies the number of colors you have at your disposal in a single pass. Only downside is that it can't really be touched up like other colors. And yes, don't just use for shadows but also for tinting.

By the way, for medium density shadows you'll want about a 50:1 ratio of extender base to ink. Also, use the extender base and not the transparent base if you are using Speedball. I don't even know what the transparent base product is good for when the extender does what you would think the transparent base is supposed to do.

I can't remember what poster it was exactly, or who did it for that matter... But I remember seeing an Iron Giant inspired (or it was an actual Iron Giant poster) poster at some point on GP. I remember it being a four or more color print with a transparent black overlay across the entire print with just the 'beams of light' left uncovered to build a ridiculously cool contrast. It gave a great 'light beams at night' effect. Not exactly the specific effect you may be looking for, but the print kicked ass and used the same approach with a unique twist... anyone remember who/what poster it was? Link/example if you do?

Justin - what about the glossiness of the trans black (trans base i find is super glossy). Won't it make some of your keyline glossy while the other not?
i accidentally printed a trans layer (mostly trans purple) over part of my black keyline then had to go over the whole thing with an open screen of pure trans. please let me know! would love to try it out this way. thx!

NIBOT, here's a poster I did with this technique:

It's a four color print, and the third screen is a split fountain of a transparent warm violet/off-black (the clouds) with a very transparent sort of cool blue/off-black for the shadow cast on the house and ground.
The keyline on this is about as close as I'll get to straight black for line art because I needed to make sure it popped enough over the dark tones in the third screen.
