Difference between Speedball Transparent Base and Extender

i know that if the extender ratio is too great, you get spotty pigment in the prints.


Also: which is better to mix powder (like if i had a florescent) into?

I don't know about the base vs extender as i don't know much about Speedball, but if you are mixing powders or metallics, a clear ink has more ability to bind the pigments than base or extender. If you find your metallic or other powders come off on your hand after the ink dries...that's what I'm talking about.

Transparent base is transparent. Extender is less so.

I use the Speedball Extender Base, and I love it. It doesn't separate! About 50/50 gets you the starts of transparency and go from there. The Transparent Base annoys the shit out of me, that's the one that gets all clunky and chunky and separates. Some people like that look though. I think it looks like separated milk or faux leather, but all weirdo.

We refer to them as "glue" and "boogers" here. Glue is usually too thick, so we add a spoonful of boogers per 8oz of glue or so. Gives it a nice inky consistency, which is great when you want to print with little or no tint.

Extender is opaque, base not. Generally the extender "entends" the ink, it acts like a thinner for pigments, affecting just the opacity. A base is a base for something and it's clearer.
