Printing over silver ink—FML

Today was without a doubt the worst day of printing I've ever had.

I'm trying to print some fine dots over a layer of silver ink, which is quite rough and textured. Everytime I do a perfect print on newsprint, the black ink just doesn't take to the silver. I feel like I've tried everything, but also feel a little burnt out with this and other things. Wish I just used grey instead.

Anyone got any tips on printing 60 dot frequency halftones over rough silver ink? Thanks guys.

Double hit on the black.

In fact, I would recommend double hit, then letting it dry and hitting it again. But you need solid registration.

Metallic inks trap poorly, to keep them from scuffing they have a surface finisher that raises to the top as they dry. Trap is one of those multi-use terms that can mean a slight over print to aid register OR the ability of one ink to stick (trap) to another. Metallic inks need to be overprinted ASAP before the scuff barrier sets.
