Default Screen Printing Magazine - or other publications

    By ST Publications:
    ST Media Group International

Is this any good? Are most topics generally dedicated to garment-printing? Is it mainly that boring industry company organization and streamlining nonsense?

I've been printing for about 5 years. Not every day or even every other week, but with a new shop that is a really comfortable environment (and actually made for what i'm doing as opposed to just working around something), my goal is to become a good printer. So keeping up with any new stuff or trying some new techniques/pushing my experimenting is something i'm really looking forward to. I didn't know if this was even worth paying attention to or if there were any other suggestions on books and whatnot.

I just purchased Andy's book (for a second time ...dunno where my other galloped off to) but anything else i dig up are generally "you can do it yourself with a nickel and a wish!" style publications as opposed to focusing on the craft.

We just got a letterpress machine, have more poster artists in town than ever and the shop is conjoined with/to a print company that's been functional since 1910. I feel like i need to up my game.

    There is. Web only. Gigposters.com.

Seriously...I'll take the knowledge base available here over any industry publication.
Most of the old world publications I've seen seem heavily focused on large-scale industrial screenprinting; $ million+ production lines, etc.
    Andymac- weigh in plz.

They use to have some pretty good books but, It's been along time scene I have bought anything from them. A good way to get alot of good info is to call or email the procduct your using and ask for technical services. These guy are very smart or aleast they should be and just make sure you tell them I don't understand when you really don't. Alot of times I would be stuck and I would get on the phone and these guys are just waiting to talk to anybody about what they know. Alot of times they will send you product samples at no charge so you can try it out. I never really had any luck with the distrubutors. Most of those guys are just there for a paycheck and most don't have any real hands on experience. Just look for the 800 number on the product.

I have a year and bit worth of issues of Screenprinting at home. I find one good article per issue, other than Anymac's column. For the most part it's more commercial/industrial printing, but if you are a big enough nerd then sometimes the articles on printing membrane panels, or circuit boards are informative on some level.

Almost all the shops I know get it for free for some reason

I don't want to shit where i eat, but the ol mag has been shrinking the last few years, and a lot of the articles may not be of interest. On the other hand, it is 'the mag' for the industry (how come most of the ads are for digital printers???) and from time to time someone has a good one.
Where there is a good resource is on their website, they have a backlog of good articles. ScreenWeb | screenweb.com | A companion site to Screen Printing Magazine
If I was a graphics guy or designer, Tom Triningham (SP?) seems to write some pretty good 'how to do it' for different aspects of creating and manipulating graphics.
Their glory years are behind them I fear - There were a lot more people writing, the industry and technology was growing by leaps and bounds in the 1980s and 90s - really good 'hands on' articles. I learned so much from that mag when i was isolated and starting screenprinting. Now, with digital print the big growth area, and nobody manufacturing here, nobody cares much for the ol squeegee. Screenprinting is growing by leaps and bounds in countries where they make shit. SP mag did come out with a new mag ISP - industrial specialty printing - not all screenprinting technology, but aimed at highend apps etc.
If you are really keen to learn and up your game, I would recommend watching for and taking the 4 colour course through SGIA.
This is actually a good site here, i think there are some good printers, maybe you need to get out more.

Ha! obviously there are some great printers on this site and there are people experimenting every day. it's a great resource i'm obnoxiously thankful for. i don't think i have anything in specific i'm trying to figure out at this particular minute. just looking to know a little more and try something i might not think of. the 4-color course is a good idea.

but no one is writing about technique or new things they're screwing around with other than when they do the hype to release it. i just didn't know if there was a place where there was material proactive about that sort of stuff.

    You can try these magazines:
Sign and Digital Graphics (http://sdgmag.com), and
    Printwear (http://printwearmag.com) and / or
    Impressions (http://www.impressionsmag.com)

Plenty of good tech articles on non-textile (Sign and Digital Graphics) and textile printing (Printwear and Impressions).
