    Default Book Making - Process

    Hey All,

So after a month and a half and some troubles I finally wrapped up a little personal project I was working on. Each season I have made it a goal to mail out a CD to a boatload of people. This is the continuation of the Fall 08 cd that I made, only for Winter 08.

This is very image heavy, maybe i tried to document a bit too well.

A ton of steps are missing, but this will give you the general idea.

    1) Plan it out and order a bunch of supplies:

Those are the boxes of paper from French. Both for the endsheets and the main pages.

    Great packaging design.

    2)

I purchased a SUPER cheap brother b&w laser printer and started printing the pages on it. This thing was a champ. I even used ebay toner and it still pumped out near 3,200 pages.

    3) My order from Hollanders showed up. I had them cut the book board to save money and time. So once that showed up i knew i had to cut around 1/8th of an inch off for the hinge (youll understand later)

    4) Next up i took the extra sheet of bookcloth and made a quick mockup just to help me design the other pages (I was printing throughout the who process) also to help me see what the end result would be

    5) First couple thousand pages printed.

    6) At this point I dont have any pictures for cutting down the book cloth or skating over to screen it. Sorry, I just forgot.

    7)

So about here all of the cover are printed, most of pages are printed at least on one side, and the bookboard is cut. After a page had been printed on both the fron and the back it was wrapped in kraft and set in its own pile.

Here I am wrapping the back cover in book cloth. This takes some time....

    9) All back covers are wrapped and stacked.

    10) now for the covers...

    11) Finished printing.

    12) At this point i attached the endsheets to the covers and backcovers, no photos due to my forgetfulness.

    13) I coallated all of the pages by laying them across my bed and down on to a table made from foamcore. They ended up in stacks like this:

    14) Then i started cutting them down. Side by side.

    15)

    16) Next up it was time to bind them all together. Since i was using screw posts I had to buy a power drill. God i love powertools.

    16) I setup a terrible jig using some scrap wood from the hardware store and some cardboard.

    17) right when i really didnt have any more room my uline order showed up.

1 so you drill the holes then slip one half of the screwpost in and then secure it from the back.

    19) Eventually i got the hang of it and started turning out 6-8 an hour.

    20) I dont have any photos of all of them finished but in total about 70 (out of the 75 that i hoped for) were finished with minimal problems)

Here are some of the shots that i've taken of it. Now that i'm at home for the holidays I don't have to ability to setup the kind of area i would have liked to take the photos in so these are just roughs of what the final images will be.

All in all there are around 70 copies. roughly 20 pages in each copy. each song got its own "illustration" and i think thats about it!
