My Process Thread - From purchase to first prints (Ongoing)

Alright, so I thought I'd do a slightly different thread for my process. I'm going to be updating this thread as I go along. Kind of like a my start with screenprinting journal.

May 11th, 2006 - Most of the supplies arrive.

Today a huge chunk of my supplies have arrived. This entails

From Performance Screenprinting - $168.91 + shipping
- 1 Qt SEX Emulsion at 50% off
- 1 Hose (not pictured)
- 3 spray bottles
- 1 Gallon Reclaimer
- 1 Gallon Degreaser
- 1 Gallon Screen Wash
- 2 Screen Brushes
- 2 Rolls of 3" tape
- 1 Gallon Blockout
- 5 one quart buckets to mix/store ink
- Some ink scoops

From Victory Factory - $167.81 (shipped)
- 1 230 Mesh Al 25x36" screen
- 1 110 Mesh Al 25x36" screen
- 1 20" Squeege
- 1 Qt Silver Metallic Plastisol Ink
- 1 pair of Hinges
- Some of those little yellow applicators
- 1 20" Scoop coater

From French Paper Co. - $58.32 (shipped)
- 100 sheets of 19x26" Smart White 110 Cover

I'm still waiting on single quarts of Process CMYK + White + Silver acrylic inks from Diesel Fuel which should ship tomorrow I'm told ($115 or so shipped). I'm also waiting on 100 13x19" inkjet films from Valley Litho ($100 + shipping).

I already have a 20x20" screen from a previous dive into the shallow end of screen printing. (speedball emulsion nightmares and whatnot. nothing exciting came out of it but I loved it. I coated the entire screen with a credit card). As well as a Halogen work lamp which I may pick up a second one to expose these rather large screens.

Sunday the plans are to run to Lowe's and pick up the supplies to build a vacuum table. I'll be documenting that whole process as well. That's all for now, I know the threads not too exciting right now, but hopefully it will be helpful to someone starting out in the future. Especially when I get to the building and printing parts. So with all of that, I leave you with a photo and a request for any last minute tips/suggestions (ie - did I forget to buy anything?)



May 12th, 2006 - I Forgot to Mention & Pressure Washer.
I, as well as many others, highly recommend you pickup Andymac's book "Screenprinting Today, The Basics". You may think that $60 bucks is a little high for a book, but considering the void of good screenprinting resources in book form, its definitely worth the extra bucks. It will save you a lot of precious time you would spend scouring the internet or showing off your true noobness by asking a question that''s answered in this book. And to make this update a little longer, I have found someone willing to sell me a black and decker 1500 PSI pressure washer that they used for an hour. It normally costs $150 but they're selling for $50 so I'll probably be picking that up this week.

definately a power washer...i got mine from home depot for $79.99 on sale. 1500psi i believe. i can't imagine reclaiming with a garden hose...

Yeah this lack of beer is worse than the credit card application of speedball emulsion. Very serious mistake. Read the threads Rook.



Kidding mang, this is going to be a good thread. So it looks like with a powerwasher and some scrounging for your table parts you are around $500-600. That's pretty good with the larger format screens.

And who's line was it (Steve W I believe?) 'Welcome to the worst year of your life' - if screenprinting doesn't make you insane, and you can figure it out, it usually prepares you for anything the world throws at you later in life.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. As for the beer (I may regret saying this as I may make a lot of enemies ) I'm not a beer drinker. I drink a more than likely unhealthy amount of Coke though. So that's fully stocked.
