Printing an etching

Just figured I'd take some pictures and show my way of doing things. I wanted to make some bigger prints to emphasize the continued pattern of my plates through replication and so I would have something I could show at print shows and stuff like that. Enough talk, here's yer process:


Here's my registration sheet so I know where to place the plates on the press


Got all the ink out


Mix yer inks


Apply ink with a card




Wipe the excess ink off with cheese cloth..


Till it looks like this


Roll up some blue on the roller


Roll blue over the plate


Lining the plate up with the purple marks on the registration sheet


The paper needs to be soaked for about half an hour, it doesn't really matter how long you leave it in there as long as the glue gets soaked out of the paper. So you take that out, put it between the paper on the table and roll it with that rolling pin to dry the paper a bit


Lay the paper on top


Crank it through the press


pull that plate off


re-ink the plate with red, then wipe it off again, then roll some yellow on top


Line that up, put the paper back down (it hasn't moved because it's still being held in place by the press), pull it through, annnnnd


There ya go!


Did the same thing with these two plates as well

It's the most tedious medium I've attempted, but it's meditative and easy to get lost in the process. Each print takes about an hour if you include cleanup and all that. It is fun, but you really pay for your mistakes.

Bizzallin! The single red-blue hexagonal print is my favorite. The plates worked out great. Did you clean the plates when you went to yellow? Hard to keep it from getting infected? Or did most of the blue transfer when pulled?

Somebody in that studio's been gouging the ink.

Intaglio is fun, but damn does it take a long time.

Pressure Printing makes it look worthwhile for me.

I didn't clean the plates between prints, because the paper absorbs almost all of the rolled color. On the next print I did yellow first though, so it wouldn't darken the red quite so much on the next print. Thanks for the compliments everyone!
