    Default Serie XVII - Richard Duardo

    We've officially begun printing for our residency program with Richard Duardo, who is the owner of Modern Multiples in L.A. He's a really capable printer in his own right, and his business prints work for a lot of people. Check it out at Modern Multiples Los Angeles – Fine Art Serigraph/Silkscreen.

    Between all the vodka tonics and american spirits, we managed to crank out an 8 color print, an interview, and a short "featurette" which I'll post here later on.

    Layer 1 :: Pink Fill

    Layer 2 :: Cyan Plate

    Layer 3 :: Magenta Plate

    Layer 4 :: Yellow Plate

    Layer 5 :: Black Key

    Layer 6 :: Split Fountain (Blue-White-Blue)

    Layer 7 :: Split Fountain (Pink-White-Pink)

    (Sorry, no picture)

    Layer 8 :: Orange!

    I worked for Richard for 9 years as his printer, he took me from a sweat shop tee-shirt printer to being an artist and printer of fine art. This guy has done so much for the world of screen printing here in Los Angeles, I should get him to put some of his early poster work up here, it should be seen!

    James - curious that same image (of the guy in the hat, not the print you did with 'Fun ' on it and the scribbles) won best in show and people's choice awards at the recent SGIA show in new Orleans golden Image competition. From a company called Graphic Trends. Wonder about the source of the art?

    Ahahaha That is hilarious, Andy. Some people here were slightly uneasy about Richard's image, but I would argue that it's substantially altered enough to not be infringing. Guess we'll have to see how Sheppard Fairey's trial turns out...

    The story from Richard was that he was originally commissioned to design a poster for the upcoming movie, which is where the source imagery came from. But, before things went to press, the makers backed out on the project. I believe Richard already had the source they provided him with, so he altered the output of the image to 15 lpi and created the other hand embellishments in this print.

    I need to finish editing the video we show of him in the studio. We did a parody of the "Charlie bit me" meme using Richard.
