Default loco lettering

I have this logo design I'm doing for an old friend. I thought I would show you all my process.

Here's the pencil sketch


I'll take this into Illustrator and retrace it

I opened the picture in Illustrator and went to layers and made it a template. then made a new layer and began tracing it with the pen tool

loco what are the advantages of making the file a template in illustrator?

I use to trace on the same layer never knowing about the template layer.
It helps keeping them seperate layers. The advantage for me is I trace with the pen tool layer in outlines (Ctrl Y) then the image I'm tracing is a ghost layer.
