    Default peint on demand

Good morning. A number of people have asked about purchasing by posters...not having any decent access to a printer or distribution plan, I thought a POD might be the way to go. I'm unimpressed with Zazzle and Cafepress, their markups seem a bit drastic. Any thoughts?

PS-that's PRINT on demand, not whatever I might have typed up in the subject...not enough coffee yet.

POD isn't a very profitable business model. High price-per-unit, but not worth much to the collector mob. It is a handy route to take if you just want to please a couple of friends or "get your work out there", but not if you want to make money.

It's less about making money and more about appeasing the fans of my band and work. Folks tell me they want prints of my work, and I'm not a man of enough means to really provide them with it. I just want a way to offer them my work...with little effort, as I'm a bit stretched thin most of the time...and if I can make a few bucks along the way, all the better. Print on demand may be lame, but it is the green choice for production. Quite frankly, it's a business model a lot of publishers will ultimately be switching to. I know nothing beats a hand screened print, but...

Less about making money? The green choice? Oh man. How about you burn a hi-res image to disk and ship it—all for free—with a note saying, "Here's your poster. Congratulations! You've just saved the World."

I'm sure everyone here will follow suit.

What is with this obsession with using web based suppliers, which always involve shipping, instead of getting off your ass and using a local printer? Print on Demand? I go down to the local print shop and they spit it out. and I don't have to demand it. I just ask nicely.
Great for making copies. Copies aren't the real deal(if the poster or art exists in another medium). Just as long as you and your fans understand that.

pod is an attractive alternative when
    - cost of distribution from a centralized point starts to become prohibitive
    - local production network is available
    - product can be easily reproduced

i don't see how limited run posters fit that model at all, except for maybe #2. great idea for books, don't know if fits higher quality color 'art'. any cost advantages to saving on shipping is eliminated by repeated set-up and quality consistency would certainly be an issue.

now, if you're talking offset or digital high volume runs, that pod network already exists.
