Default Compare contrast. Providence and minneapolis poster art.

So I'm currently in providence RI doing an artist residency. on the 30th, I'm giving a little talk about my work, and i'm also going to be talking about the history of silkscreen printmaking and touching on poster art. I thought it would be a good thing to compare and analyze the difference between midwest/ minneapolis styles and providence ones and do a bit of speculating on why these different styles arise.

I'm for sure going to show images of:
    Mpls:
Unitus, Burlesque, Tooth, Aesthetic, Dwitt, Amy Jo, Landland

and talk about some of the crustier art in
    Prov:
Gunsho, Pippi Zarnoza, Xander Marrow, Micky Zachilli, Brian Chippendale...

I am away from home, so I don't have access to any books (outside of the library) and I dont have a ton of time to do research.. so if anyone wants to chime in about what they feel characterizes some of the poster art made in these two places, I'd really appreciate it. and these lists are just off the top of my head so please suggest others.

    XOXO

    please do!
I sat next to him at the bar at AS220 but I was too shy to say hello.

I am kind of being serious here folks. Dwitt. I do think prov. poster art is more gnarly. I'm just trying to speculate why. I know forth thunder yadda yadda, but I was wondering if people had some idea of where that whole scene stemmed from. Like, was it a bunch of RISD educated "Punks" letting their hair down and making some crusty posters for fun??? or for their metal bands. There does seem to be more metal out here.

and why is Mpls design so nice? MCAD? chicago influence? people trained or working as graphic designers first, and then got into making posters??

just trying to maybe attempt at a hypothesis, or get a sense of each places history.

    XOXO

Providence has a tension that I don't think exists in Minneapolis. It's a small, historic town, with roots and traditions that trace back further than most other cities in the country. The abundance of schools creates a constant flux of new residents that counters those traditions. The locals are wary of the new students, which makes them further retreat into their art-making caverns. Additionally, the proximity to Boston and New York, and being the largest city in RI gives Providence an inflated and more urban mentality than it would otherwise be--further adding to that tension.
