I still find it weird that they think the artist's name somehow "compromises the design." The many thousands of posters here can attest to the invalidity of that.

After considering everyone's opinions, I replied that I'd do it but only because I like the band so much, which is true.

well. I think that i can see both sides being relevant, but i would do the job, make the monies, and move along. If you do the poster for them whether or not your name is on it, you will be crediting yourself with doing it. it will be on your site, you will be selling it, and you will be making moneis. You will be better in the end.....however i do think artists deserve credit where its due, ego or none. i mean the band wouldnt put a song out and then not tell anyone who did it would they?

never once had a band ask us to leave our credit off. from an artists working with other artists I'd think they understand what the value of a credit is. Would they tell the producer to leave their name off the CD they recorded?

and for stamping on the back I always thought it was strange not to put your credit on the front. after the show promotion these things are great big business cards for postermakers. I will actually look up a designer if I see something hanging I like and their info is on there.

and it would totally depend on the pre set deal whether or not we'd leave the credit off if asked.

I agree with you 100% Jeremy - the only compromise I'd even consider on a deal like that would be to print it without your name and sign them © 2008 Jeremy Wilson

To the band's credit, it is their merch company I am dealing with and who is making the demand.

They are making it out like I am crazy for making it such a sticking point and that it's really unusual to have the artist's name on the front. It's not just promotion, which is big, but having my name on my work.

I've already caved but I still think I'm right.

Ok... so if you created the art and you're printing the posters... they are WAY out of line to demand that you not have credit. and to follow their lead...
as a " cultural artifact " the whole point of the integrity is LOST if there is no way to trace the origin of the piece.
I say fuk 'em... I want credit for my work and will not put out anything without my name on it.
They are obviously not interested in supporting the artist that make these important cultural artifacts that their ( from their point of view ) overly sensitive and uninformed collectors seem to love so much...
Maybe they should give their collectors some credit and realize that maybe they collect the artist's style and not just their fucking band name... maybe they want to know who does the art.
Maybe they should leave their name off too... Oh wait... IT'S A FUCKING ADVERTISEMENT FOR THEM...hmmm... interesting.

If you are retaining the copyright to the art, you have every right to put and keep your name on it. your work is what brings you your lively hood and self-promotion is vital. And unless they are paying you exceptionally well, I'd probably walk away from the job under that condition.

If you have agreed to an all-rights buy out, then I would take my name off since they will be the copyright holder (essentially the same as if "they" designed the poster).

No, it is the standard "You get X posters for $Y and I sell the rest to pay for it all" deal. I retain all rights.

In this case it is 100 posters for $4 each.

As a caveat, they will "allow me" to put my name on the back.
