for once, i'm with jeremy on this. one solution is (as andy diesel suggested) that the price goes up another buck or two per piece if your name isn't on them. not so discounted now.
and they want them signed? sign them really fucking clearly with your website. but do take the job, get paid. move on. i think.

The deal is already done - we've already agreed and the poster will be made without my name on the front. At this point I am continuing the discussion only for academic purposes.

also, i agree with the other points here: if it's like a generic ad (AT&T or some such), then fuck, of course you're not going to put your name on it.
but if you're crafting a body of work, something with a more personal angle, like gigposters, then your name should be on it if you want it to be.

This is also a solid point.

The argument here is most of us approach making posters as making art. We follow (or should follow) the Tamarind guide so they are true limited edition, signed, numbered screen prints. These are not print ads for Virgin Records or 5000 kid rock t-shirts. Trying to compare that type of advertising to the majority of the editions we all do is a bad argument. Regardless if it's merch for the band or flyers pasted all over town.
Plus almost all of you put your credit on the poster so why is this a bad thing that Jeremy questions why he's being asked to leave his credit off? I wouldn't do it unless I was getting some offsetting benefit for leaving it off such as full price for a commercial job. And saying his prices are high is half of what's wrong with this business. His prices should be the norm or even low. ANy of you who actually do your own printing know how much time we give away holed up in the studio. Go break down what you make an hour after every single thing that goes into a poster is added up. It's gonna be less than min wage I bet. Credit is one of the few things that can make up for the retarded low pay we accept. There's never any guarantee the over run we're allowed to sell will even sell. The best thing that can happen is that poster credit will drive business your way in the form of web sales or new work. Collectively we aren't helping any of us get above water by charging so little. I'm as guilty as the next printer but at least support the need to get credit on something that traditionally gets credit. This ain't Satchi and Satchi hiring us to make Toyota ads... This is a formula Kozik made famous that works pretty OK. Stand up for the little bit we get out of it.
