I can only speak for myself, so here goes:

X's music has always held for me this feeling of dark cynicism. Johnny Hit and Run Pauline, Sex and Dying in High Society, most of Under the Big Black Sun, etc. So, I guess I was trying to meld that with the dark cynicism of Houdini (who was both dark and highly cynical) and his weird and untimely death in Detroit. His last show was at the Majestic Theatre (not the Garrick) where the X/Cobras show was being held. And, most of the people attending that show would know that and find it cool.

I also didn't want to do a big giant X, too.

Plus, as someone pointed out, Houndini was an X-scape artist.
